The National Programme for IT (NPfIT) is to change its name to Connecting for Health. Richard Granger, head of NPfIT, made the announcement at the Healthcare Computing conference in Harrogate this week. It is to become effective on 1 April 2005.
"We think it is a good name because that is what we are about," Granger said.
He also identified some of the challenges facing the programme over the year. One of these will be engagement with clinical and managerial staff across the NHS.
Granger said that so far the programme has not been seriously addressed at board level in many health organisations and few decisions have been made on how IT will support business processes.
Other priorities include the need to increase the pace of implementation of NPfIT systems and encouraging delivery. He stated that the programme's achievements so far have been very impressive in delivering core systems for e-booking, the core platform for the spine and some "out of scope" infrastructure and applications. The latter includes a new email system and directory for 100,000 users and patient assessment and management software for GPs.
